Let’s start from the beginning.

In the beginning

1986: Electronics Specialist @ Singapore Navy – I was trained in electronics engineering. My first career was with the Singapore Navy. I took care of the electronics onboard the ships. On the side, I also took care of the video cameras we use to record our exercises.  I had to deal with the camera vendors for maintenance regularly. When my service contract ran out, I joined one of the vendors.

1991: Marketing Officer @ Panasonic Pro AV – I joined Panasonic as a Marketing Officer. So, instead of doing technical work, I am now selling or marketing products. I am in the Pro AV section, where we have huge broadcast cameras and video editing systems. My main customer was the one and only broadcasting station in Singapore… and a few video production companies. I realized that the video production people were having fun making videos. So I joined one of them.

1995: Videographer @ a Video Production House – I joined a small video production house as a Videographer. This is where I got all my creative skills. It’s like attending film school with on-the-job training and getting paid. I did a lot of corporate videos, event videos, and wedding videos. I was shooting weddings almost every weekend. The company charged about $1000 per wedding. I shoot at least 4 weddings per month. My monthly salary was only S$1500. Something wasn’t right. So I left to strike out on my own.

1998: Started a Wedding Videography Business – I started shooting weddings for friends for free. Then I charged $400 for their referrals.  Over the years, I raised my fee till I reach about $2000 per wedding videography service. In those days, the price was considered high. Even the photographers working next to me will say I am crazy to charge a price no one will pay for. The reality is I am booked every weekend. Those were the good days. Good money. Good life… but age caught up. Shooting a wedding for long hours requires a lot of energy. I left the wedding industry.

2006: Switched to Corporate Videography – Doing corporate video was a lot easier but the money is less. Businesses usually ask for 3 quotes and choose the cheapest. It’s easier because clients will chase me to finish my shoot at 5 pm because they need to go home… unlike weddings where customers will ask if I can stay a little longer because they want to extend the party. The nature of the video is viral. When I make a video for a client, the client will show the video to their own client. Then their client will ask my client who made the video because they also want to make a video. The viral cycle keeps repeating until I had to hire staff.

2007: Hired full-time talents to help me – I hired camera people, video editors, and admin staff to help me with running my video production company. We expanded the office space, traveled overseas… Everything was good, but it didn’t last long.

2008: Global Financial Crisis!!! – The year of the rat. The situation was just like 2020, also the year of the rat. All our clients stopped calling us. There were no new businesses coming in for months. I had to retrench all my staff and close the office.

Experimented with YouTube – I had nothing to do, but to channel my creativity onto YouTube.

Created a viral video with 1 million views – One of my videos went viral. It got 1 million views within 3 months. This got me excited. This is when I became very interested in making videos for YouTube.

2009: Branched into Videography Training – One year later, the financial crisis began to subside. My old clients started calling me. They tell me they have their own camcorders and video editing software (they still need to make videos during the crisis on their own when there is no budget to hire vendors). They tell me their problems in shooting videos – the face is too dark, the voice is too soft, the background is noise, and more. Then they request for me to teach them videography and video editing skills.

Fast forward to today – I am still sharing my experience with you…

BUT WAIT! All that is ancient history!

– My YouTube channel now had over 5 million views and over 23,000 subscribers.

– I am also on Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, and Tiktok.

– My Tiktok at this point of writing has got over 100,000 followers… tiktok.com/@adrianvideoimage

Turned YouTube into a Business

Something else happened along the way that got me to turn YouTube into a business.

I posted a review video of a product I bought, which caught the attention of the product manufacturer.

The product manufacturer offered to give me their newly launched product for me to make reviews.

I made the product reviews, which then caught the attention of their competitor.

The competitor brand offered to give me their product for me to make reviews.

The cycle then kept going on… and on… and on… and on!

It’s a win-win situation.

I get to keep the products for free. I make the review videos. I earn a commission from every sale.

How did that happen? How did I create and market my video content to grab attention?

I have documented everything and I am still documenting.

I share my discoveries with participants in the courses I conduct.

See you inside!
