Is This the Best Gimbal for Gopro Hero 7 Black – Inkee Falcon Review

I have a few gimbals for the GoPro, which I will compare in another post.

In this post, I am going to test the Inkee Falcon.

Top Feature and Modes

360 degrees rotation. This is my number one favorite feature.

Then there is the usual Pan Follow mode where it follows my left-right motion but not the up-down motion so as to keep my camera pointing steadily to the front.

The Horizontal Lock mode follows my left-right and up-down motion but keeps the camera level with the horizon.

The First-person View mode follows my left-right up-down and rotation motion for that creative freedom.

Press 3 times on the trigger flips the camera to become a selfie gimbal.

I can also shoot vertical, though I wish I can shoot vertical selfies. So it’s not suitable for tiktok 🤕.

What’s in the Box

Inside my box, there is a quick start guide, the stabilizer, a mini tripod, a USB to USB-C charging cable, 1 big screw, 1 small screw, 1 big hexagon wrench, 1 small hexagon wrench, and a storage pouch.

What’s not included in the box? The Action Camera.

This is not a smartphone gimbal you see in my other videos.

How to Set Up and Balance

I wish the setup was easier, but like other gimbals, I have to go through this manual process.

  • Here’s how to properly set up the Inkee Falcon.
  • First, attach the mini tripod and place it firmly on the table.
  • I need to use a mounting frame from my old GoPro Hero 7 which is not required for newer GoPros.
  • Match the camera mounting buckle to the gimbal base plate.
  • Use the big thumbscrew to tighten.
  • If the camera tilts in any direction, we have to balance it before turning it on.
  • Use the small hex wrench.
  • Loosen the Left-Right adjustment lock. Adjust the camera position until it doesn’t fall to one side. Then tighten the lock screws.
  • Loosen the front-rear adjustment lock. Adjust the camera position left and right until it doesn’t fall forward or back. Then tighten the lock screws.
  • A balanced gimbal means the camera stays in whichever position I move it.
  • If the big thumbscrew looks bulky, then replace it with the smaller screw (and re-balance).
  • Use the big hex wrench to tighten it and I must remember to bring it along wherever I go with my Inkee Falcon.
  • Fully charge the stabilizer when using it for the first time via the USB C port.

This is done only once. I don’t have to do it again if I use the same action camera all the way… Except for charging.

How to Pair the GoPro with the Gimbal

This is what they call remote control.

  • Turn on both the GoPro and the gimbal.
  • On the GoPro, go to Preferences and Connections.
  • Turn on Wireless Connections.
  • Go to Connect Device and select GoPro App.

This is the best part. After pairing, the GoPro will turn off whenever I turn off the gimbal and vice versa. There’s no need to touch the GoPro anymore.

How to Use the Inkee Falcon

  • Hey, Adrian, show me how to use the Inkee Falcon.
  • I will also show you what else it can do.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds to turn it on.
  • The red power button looks like the record button oh, so sometimes I get confused.

Gimbal Moves

I went outdoors to test some real-world gimbal moves.

  • The Reveal
  • The Classic Push-In
  • The Classic Pull-Out
  • The Squeeze
  • Underslung
  • The Sky Fall
  • The Ground Up
  • The Orbit
  • The Vortex

The Bad and Good

Here are 3 things I wish could be better.

  1. It could be water-resistant or waterproof just like the GoPro.
  2. I wish there is a way to charge my GoPro so I don’t have to change the GoPro battery every hour.
  3. Motion Timelapse should be a feature because I don’t need a gimbal for regular timelapse.

I use my GoPro mostly for my travel vlogs. So here are 3 reasons why I like to bring the Inkee Falcon along.

  1. It’s compact, lightweight, and the battery lasts the full day. Check out the full specs in the description.
  2. With the joystick, I can tilt the camera 90 degrees up, all the way down, and pan 360 degrees round and round… Including my favourite vortex rotation.
  3. One more thing. There is an app for controlling the Falcon remotely. The app is also for updating firmware, calibration, adjusting motor speed and joystick speed.

Remote control app?…

Who is Inkee?

  • Sounds like Inky. It’s the Cantonese pronunciation of the Chinese brand.
  • They make other professional products like the wireless video transmitter and the remote control grip.
  • They don’t make smartphone gimbals. Maybe not yet.

What is Inkee Falcon?

  • Falcon! What comes to your mind when you hear this word?
  • The Inkee Falcon is a 3-axis gimbal stabilizer for action cameras.
  • No, it is not for smartphones, though the bigger MOZA Mini-P can do both.
  • 3-axis means it stabilizes the camera in the 3 moving directions – pan, tilt, and roll.

Who is this for?

  • This is designed for the vlogger like me.
  • I can shoot a selfie just by pressing the button.

Do I need a gimbal for GoPro?

  • My GoPro already has built-in stabilization. Why do I need a gimbal?
  • That’s what I thought too. I like to shoot travel vlogs with just a mini tripod as a grip.
  • However, I can’t keep a walking scene level with the ground and I still get that bobbing up and down.
  • With a gimbal stabilizer, it’s like I’m gliding… Oh, that could be why they call it a Falcon!
  • Furthermore, in some resolution and frame rate settings on the GoPro, stabilization is not supported.

Is it compatible with other action cameras?

  • According to the sales page, the gimbal is compatible with GoPro Hero 9/8/7/6/5, Osmo Action, and Insta360 One R.
  • There is no worry about the size of your action camera.
  • Other gimbals are limited by the size of the cage holder.
  • On the Inkee Falcon, we get the standard GoPro accessory screw mount.

General Questions

  • How stable is it when running? It’s better with the stabilization turned on in the GoPro.
  • Can it shoot vertical videos? Yes, but not vertical selfies.
  • Can it shoot motion timelapse videos? No.
  • What else can it do? Dream effect, 360, flashlight, rotation, joystick, and remote control via blue tooth. iPhone app.
  • Where can I buy it? Check the link below.
  • What’s in the box?
  • What can it NOT DO? It’s not water-resistant like the Hohem iSteady Pro 3. Battery life, payload limit. Not extendable. No face tracking. No tightening screws. Troublesome to balance. No motion timelapse.

Ad-hoc Observations

  • GoPro automatically turns off when the Falcon is turned off. The GoPro turns on when turning on the Falcon. 👍
  • The operating functions don’t work properly when the charging cable is plugged in. 🧐
  • Mode selection cycles through in sequence. There is no back selection. 🙁
  • There is no motion timelapse as mentioned on the Amazon sales page. ☹
  • The app is currently for iPhone only. You have to install an APK file for Android. Used for updating firmware. Control the Falcon remotely. Calibration. Adjust motor speed and joystick speed. 👍
  • No charging port for GoPro. I must charge my GoPro for longer shoots. ☹
  • The recording buttons activate the last GoPro record settings even if I change it after the GoPrk is linked to the Falcon. 🧐
  • With GoPro stabilization turned off, I have to do the ninja walk. 🤕
  • The balancing Allen keys are an inconvenience. What if I don’t have it with me? What if I misplaced it? Without it, I cannot rebalance the camera, or even try to tighten it. Better to have thumbscrews. 🤕
  • No problem if I’m using the same GoPro all the way. I will be taking it out every time I change to a new mounting accessory. 🧐
  • I like how I can pack it flat. 👍
