Is the Rodecaster Pro worth it for Live Streaming?

In the review, I am going to show you my top 3 reasons for using the Rodecaster Pro for live streaming, and how you can use it on OBS, StreamYard, Facebook Live, and more.

I will also touch on the other features which I never use but you may.

Ok, this $800 device belongs to a friend and I have it for a few days to test it. The Rodecaster Pro is a piece of podcasting equipment, mainly for recording your voices.

Can I use it for live streaming?

Here are the top 3 reasons why I like the Rodecaster Pro for live streaming

Setting up the RØDECaster Pro for Live Streaming

RØDECaster Pro is capable of combining a variety of sound sources for streaming, whether via the microphone channels, smartphone or USB channels, or sound pads. This allows for additional expansion for any content creator who needs more options while streaming.

In order to stream, you’ll likely be using software like OBS.

How to set up Rodecaster Pro with OBS on PC?

First, connect RØDECaster Pro to the computer.

  • Use the included USB-C to USB-A cable to connect the Rodecaster Pro to the computer.
    • Your RØDECaster Pro should instantly be recognized by the computer as an audio device.
    • If your computer (or Macbook) only has a USB-C input then use a USB-C to USC-C Cable, like the RODE SC17 USB-C to USB-C High-Speed Cable.
  • Open the sound settings on the computer and select ‘RODECaster Pro Stereo’ as the output device
    • Slowly turn up the USB fader on your RØDECaster Pro.
    • You should be able to hear playback from your computer on the USB channel when playing audio from any application.
  • In the same sound settings menu, select ‘RODECaster Pro Stereo’ as the input device.
    • The RØDECaster Pro is now the default device or “microphone” for the system.

In the next step, we will route the audio from the RØDECaster Pro to the streaming software.

Setting up the Streaming Software

Here’s how to send the audio from your RØDECaster Pro to OBS.

  • Open OBS, go to ‘Sources’ and press the + button and select ‘Audio Input Capture’.
  • Press ‘OK’ and you will be prompted to select a device for this source.
  • Click on the drop-down menu and select “(Microphones) RØDECaster Pro Stereo” as your device, then press OK.
  • The RØDECaster Pro will now appear as a device in the audio mixer.

All audio from the RØDECaster Pro will be routed to OBS, including the microphones, sound pads, smartphone channel, Bluetooth channel, and anything playing through the USB channel.

All audio from the computer, including gameplay, music, etc, will be heard via the USB channel on the RØDECaster Pro.

Setting up the Communication Apps

Discord or Teamspeak are often used in live gaming to chat with teammates. It is simple to set up with the RØDECaster Pro.

  • Within the comms app, open the audio settings.
  • Select ‘RØDECaster Pro Stereo’ as the audio input and output device.

The audio from the app will come through the USB channel on the RØDECaster Pro. The audio from the RØDECaster Pro will be heard in the comms app.

To get crystal-clear communication without echo or feedback, turn on mix-minus for the USB channel.

  • Go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Advanced’ > ‘Audio’ > ‘Processing’ and switching on ‘USB Mix-Minus’.
