3 Instances When to Use Ellipsis in Closed Captions [Adding Subtitles to Video]

Are you wondering how to write out a dialogue (transcribe) when the spoken sentence is incomplete? Use ellipsis.

What is Ellipsis?

“An ellipsis (plural ellipses) is a series of dots (typically three, such as “…”) that usually indicates an intentional omission of a word, sentence, or whole section from a text without altering its original meaning.” ~ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis

When to Use Ellipsis?

There are 3 instances when to use ellipsis in closed captions.

  1. When you want to direct the viewer to watch something on the screen.
  2. When the speaker or actor is doing something or gesturing.
  3. When there is a long 3 to 5-second pause mid-sentence.
